Value added to farm business through private kill retail

The number of abattoirs in the UK is declining and they are becoming more specialised. As a result, it is become more difficult for farmers to access a private kill service in order to retail their own meat.

This research seeks to understand the value added to farm businesses when using a private kill service to retail own meat. Our focus is specifically on farmers who finish cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and deer.

The study is funded by The Prince’s Countryside Fund.  This charitable organisation has deep-rooted interests in the wellbeing of farming families, viable farm businesses and the rural economy throughout the UK.

The research is conducted by staff at Newcastle University. Your responses will be treated in the strictest confidence.

How long will it take and what does it involve?

The survey will take less than 5 minutes to complete. It will involve answering questions regarding the value added to your livestock when selling them through your private kill retail business compared to liveweight/deadweight sales.
